Recently, my school presented an assembly regarding the life cycles of farm animals and the harmful attributes associated with modern day farming. I mentioned in a blog post written earlier this year about the positive impacts of ancient farming methods regarding sustainability and health. However, I was unaware of the major shortcomings of modern day farming. I knew that animals were mistreated, but it was excruciating to hear about the premature and grusome deaths of male chicks, the restraints on pregnant pigs and the trauma that workers have to endure on the farms. Many animals and people suffer to create the products we eat today and many know about these conditions, so why aren't more people switching over to veganism and healthier alternatives? There are many resonable factors, some including accessibility, lack of knowledge and price. However, research done has shown that the cost is a misconception (and people will save $750 annually by switching to veganism).
While there are many benefits to becoming vegan, I fear that people are forgetting one key factor in making the switch: the people working on the farms. Often illegal immigrants and desperate for money, these people have no alternative. While the pay is meager and there are many health issues and mental issues associated with the hard tasks, they are unable to find other options. If we put these companies out of business, we put these people out of a job too.
