Poly has often brought alumni, former teachers and current parents to the school to share their accomplishments, career paths and words of wisdom. While I have heard my fair share of speakers, and learned a great deal from all of them, current Poly parent Jessica Jackley was perhaps the most influential to hear from in today's world of volunteer and service-work. What I mean by this statement (and what I have highlighted in my previous posts), is that it services our community greatly to hear from people who have created sustainable change and who have demonstrated consistency. After all, it is the continued effort and reliability that makes sustainable change possible.
Jessica Jackley is the creator of KIVA, a non-profit organization that organizes micro-loans to help lift low-income entrepreneurs out of poverty. Her site has become life-changing for those looking to escape the clutches of poverty and a place for people to make small donations with major impact. The outcome has come full circle, as those who have often benefited from the site's donations have become donors themselves.
Jackley is a person who is willing to take risks, make mistakes and learn from others. She sent a powerful message with her presentation and has inspired the Poly community to search for the purpose behind their work, and the ways to make lasting impact.
