Many of my English classes have focused on topics of identity and culture. While I have always felt unsure of my thoughts regarding these topics, I have always known that I wrestle to understand myself. Among many empowering subjects Chipembere discussed, he specifically talked about his relationship with Malawi as someone from the Los Angeles. Over the course of many years, Chipembere has been an advocate for the Malawian people and a source of hope, creativity and resources. However, he expressed that he isn't always seen as Malawian and thus cannot fully identify with the culture. In many cases, feeling unaccepted has brought people pain, resentment and unforgivable actions, but Chipembere has instead embraced his relationship with Malawian culture and has found his inspiration in continuing his father's work, his passion for the Malawian people and hope that the world will become a more compassionate place.
