Several weeks ago, Ms. Zetlian, one of our school's college counsellors discussed the Armenian Genocide through her lens, as an Armenian who grew up in Lebanon. She emphasized that her perspective is different because she is not an Armenian from the area around Turkey. She shared that their perspectives regarding war reparations and a formal apology were very different because they were directly affected by the genocide, but Armenians that resided outside of Turkey and Armenia did not push so hard for reparations.
She also discussed Lebanon as a country (which apparently hadn't been a country for very long and was largely self-goverened). While she was living there, the country had no formal government, and to keep leadership had divided into religious factions. People not practicing the religion of the faction were forbidden to enter, and when they did, were often killed. According to Ms. Zetlian, the morning traffic reports were based on snipers. This was to prevent people from driving where snipers were hiding. And the only way they could know this is if someone had died in that spot earlier. I was very interested in what Ms. Zetlian had to say and was thankful for her openness.
